Pastoral Council/Vibrant Parish Minute November 1, 2016

 Pastoral Council/Vibrant Parish Minute   November 1, 2016

Pastoral Council Members:  Bernadette Drabik (Chairperson), Natalka Verzole (Vice Chairperson), Zoriana Mangione (Trustee), Irene Skalij, Diane Filak.  Representatives:  Jo Ann Dunne (OMPHS), Fr. Mikhail Myshchuk, Fr.  Deacon Thomas Gutch

In Attendance: Fr. Mikhail Myshchuk, Bernadette Drabik, Natalka Verzole, Irene Skalij, Zoriana Mangione, Diane Filak, Jo Ann Dunne and guest Frank Bellicose. Fr. Mikhail opened the meeting with a prayer to the Holy Spirit.

Our Mother of Perpetual Help Society: Jo Ann Dunne reported the Society has is continuing to make regular monthly visits to our sick and homebound parishioners, making telephone calls and sending cards. In October we celebrated three 90th birthdays, Julia Adamovich on Oct. 3, who requested just a birthday card signed by members of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Society. Helen Krill’s birthday was on Oct. 6. Birthday cake was enjoyed in the church hall after Divine Liturgy. Mary Caldwell’s 90th birthday was celebrated on Oct. 16 with a Moleben to the Blessed Mother at her home. Many family members and friends attended.  On the first Sunday in November we will commemorate the milestone birthdays of all parishioners who will be 95 years of age or older by December 31, 2016. There will be a combined Liturgy followed by a lunch of ziti and meatballs and a birthday cake served in the church hall. Invitations to the honorees were sent and an announcement was placed in the church bulletin. Members of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Society will be in charge of food preparation, setting up the hall and cleanup.

Religious Education: Bernadette Drabik reported that Christmas cards for sick and homebound parishioners have been prepared and are ready to be sent out.

Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy:

We have one more session to go, the food drive to benefit Joseph’s House in November.

October was Blanket Month to prepare for Code Blue. Under Corporal Works of Mercy “Shelter the Homeless we collected more than 50 new blankets which were given to Joseph’s House and Capital City Rescue Mission.

November will be Food Drive Month. This will be under “Feed the Hungry,” and food will be collected to be donated to Joseph’s House for Thanksgiving food baskets.

Lenten Mission for 2017 – We do not have a report on the final cost of inviting Vinny Flynn to speak. Due to the anticipated cost, we would need permission from the eparchy to invite him.  Father Mikhail spoke a priest in Long Island regarding the mission. Fr. Mikhail spoke with Very Rev. Archpriest Roman Mirchuk, who was assigned to Whippany Center and is now a Missionary in Ukraine. He is coming home during Lent after serving two years. He speaks both Ukrainian and English and Pastoral Council members agreed that we should try to invite him to do our mission. If possible we would like to schedule the mission on Saturday and Sunday, March 26 or April 2, the week before Palm Sunday.

Post Sobor – It was reported that the video of the Patriarch in Ukraine was the most important part of the Sobor. Under Vibrant Parish it told about churches in Ukraine, orphanages and refugees. Our church is global; the church addresses the needs of each area.

People Who No Longer Come to Church: Fr. Mikhail reported that Fr. Mazurik sent a text message to those that were no longer coming to his church and received positive results.  This is one idea that we may consider.

St. Mary’s Church in Crescent has a pamphlet called “Becoming an Inviting Church,” which is 20 pages long. Bernie will look through it for ideas and report at the next meeting.

We need to advertise what we are all about if we hope to attract new members. We need to educate our parishioners about the Catholic faith; some have inaccurate ideas about Catholic teaching. There will be further discussion at future meetings.

Mega churches have many members but they attract them by entertaining. We have the Eucharist.

Zoriana had an idea to invite people to church to ask all of the questions they always wanted to ask. A Friday evening meeting was suggested, serving wine and cheese. We find that non-church goers have strange ideas about what we believe.

First Sunday Luncheons – The schedule for first Sunday luncheons so far are as follows:

  • December: Zoriana will firm up a plan with Joe Proctor for the dinner. The Ukrainian School will do desserts and have a program. Natalka needs two altar boys to greet the Bishop, Father and Natalka will decide who will greet him.
  • January: There will be no luncheon on the first Sunday in January, New Year’s day, Divine Liturgy will be at 11:00 a.m.

Suggestions: There were none.

Dominican Retreat House: Bernie and Natalka are not planning to go.

Holy Land Visit: Fr. Terlecky advised that you can fly with lay overs for $1,200.00.

Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy: We do not have plans to extend the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Divine Mercy.

Ukrainian Catechism in English, “Christ Our Pascha”: We will advertise in the bulletin, the cost is $25.00.

“33 Days to Merciful Love”: We will advertise in the bulletin, the cost is $10.50.

Father closed the meeting with a prayer.   Next Meeting: Dec. 7, 2016 at 6:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,   Jo Ann Dunne
