1.    Parish Membership - We welcome all our visitors and guests who worship at St. Nicholas.  We invite families and individuals who wish to become members to register with us by calling Church Office at 273-6752 or speaking with Fr. Mikhail after the Church service.

2.    Special Collection - All of us are aware of the devastation that the earthquake that ravaged Haiti this past week has left.  It has claimed thousands of lives, destroyed homes, churches, and schools and left millions without the most basic necessities of life.  We are asked to help with our prayers and our financial support. Today we will pray and remember the victims of this tragedy during the Liturgies and next Sunday, January 24^th, a collection for the victims of the earthquake will be taken. Bishop Paul is urging us to be as understanding and generous as possible - and we will respond to this need as we have done in the past with our kind and generous hearts. 

3.    Coffee After Sunday Liturgies—You are reminded that coffee and refreshments are being served after both Divine Liturgies to benefit our school programs.  Please come downstairs to chat with your friends and fellow parishioners.

4.    NEW COUNCIL MEMBERS:  Interested in serving on our Pastoral or Stewardship Council? Or would you like to recommend another parishioner who would be a valuable addition to either Council? Nominations are being accepted for vacancies on both Councils.  Nominees must be at least 18 years old and a member in good standing with the Church. Nominations are to be submitted to the church office in written form by January 24.  Please consider Diocesan Guidelines in making your decisions.  For further information about the Councils or to submit nominations please see Father Mikhail, Donna Getman or Nicholas Fil.

5.    Look at our Web page - Our parish has its Web Page published on-line. Our address www.cerkva.com.  Please inform your children about our presence on-line.

6.    Meetings Church Councils and Organizations: 

Ø                   OMPHS—will hold their meeting on January 18, 2010 at 1:00 pm.

7.    Patronize our Advertisers - on the back of our weekly bulletin are the names of those who advertise with us.  We ask that you please patronize these generous people.  We wish that God may grant them many successful years in their profession.

8.    Mittens - Many people are feeling the cold this time of the year and to help them through the season, we are asking for donations of handmade (or purchased) hats, scarves, gloves, and mittens. These will be given to the Watervliet-Green Island Food Pantry and distributed to those who need them most. Please place your gifts in the “MITTENS” box in the back of the church.   

9.    UNWLA Br. 99 will have the "Yalynka" - traditional Christmas Eve Dinner on today at 3:00 PM at the St. Nicholas Church Hall, Watervliet.  Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for ages 5 to 18.  For tickets, please call – Vera Kushnir 495-5032.

10. The Sower - February is Catholic Press month, a time when we annually renew our subscription and support for The Sower.  This year, the Eparchy is forced to raise the annual rate to $20 for our newspaper – the first increase in over a decade.  Please help The Eparchy to continue to provide this valuable resource of information by placing your donation of twenty dollars in the envelope „Catholic Press Month” provided by your parish.” 

11. Sacrament of Matrimony - couples planning to be married should contact the pastor at least six months prior to the proposed date to allow ample time for preparation.  No other arrangements should be made before contacting the Church.

 

 

                 STAMFORD DIOCESE PARISH COUNCIL

POLICIES AND GUIDELINES

I. Canon 295

Canon 295 of the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches states: "In the parish there are to be appropriate councils dealing with pastoral and financial matters, in accord with the norms of the particular law of its own Church sui juris." In accordance with c. 290.1, 'The pastor represents the parish in all its juridic affairs." He is to see to it that the goods of the parish are administered in accord with the norms of canons 1020.1.2., 1024-1026, 1029, 1030-1032.  The Stewardship and Pastoral Councils are a mandated consultative body which advises pastors and pastoral administrators regarding stewardship of parish financial resources and other parish related matter.  The councils possess a consultative voice.

Membership:

"Only such members may be placed on the stewardship council who strive to model their lives on the moral principles of the Catholic Church; who frequent the Holy Mysteries; who cause no scandal; and who are not hostile to the Church and Church Authorities" (Pastoral Guide, art. 588.3).

In addition, members should be:

a.        • not related to the parish priest by blood or marriage;  

b.        • not in the employ of the parish;             

c.        • baptized and confirmed Catholics in good standing with the Church:

d.        • registered and supporting members of the parish;          

e.        • participants in parish life;       

f.         • in possession of an understanding of and commitment to the Church in accord with the principles of Vatican II;

g.        • committed to prayer, study, listening and dialogue;

h.        • committed to giving the time needed for participation; and

i.         • confirmed by the bishop.

j.         If a parish employs a professional staff member as business manager, the manager should serve as an ex-officio member.
